Feeder Materials - ASA Versus Galvanised Metal
If you are looking for a long-lasting chicken feeder, ASA and galvanised metal are the materials with the most endurance. However, not all feeder materials are created equal.
Problems with galvanised feeders include:
-
Metal rusts and may contaminate feed
-
Feeders with moving parts, such as treadle feeders, eventually seize up and stop working
-
Joins and fasteners like screws often leak, spoiling feed
Not all plastic feeders are long lasting, but Dine-A-Chook Feeders are.
Our industry leading feeders for chickens are:
-
Industrial quality
-
Designed to last a lifetime
-
UV-treated to ensure the plastic will not degrade even in the hot sun
-
Certified BPA-free
-
Free from lead and other potential contaminants
-
Free from moving parts that seize up and break
-
Designed to click together, meaning no fasteners, no glue and no leaks
-
Completely opaque to prevent feed degrading or spoiling due to sun exposure
Zero Waste Chicken Feeder
Dine-A-Chook chichen feeders are designed to help reduce waste in the chicken coop.
If you have ever used a standard chicken feeder, you will know that chooks like to throw their feed all over the place. This is natural behaviour – chickens forage by using their sensitive beak to push through plants and leaf matter, and using their claws to scratch up protein-rich worms and insects. The problem is that when they try this with chicken feed, they make a mess!
Unfortunately, chicken feed that ends up on the ground doesn’t usually get eaten, wasting money.
Wasted feed on the ground also causes other problems:
-
The smell of rotting feed attracts rodents to your chicken coop
-
It becomes an easy food source for pests like wild birds, rodents and insects
-
The feed can become mouldy, making your chickens ill if they consume it
-
The feed becomes contaminated with poo, passing diseases and parasites on to your birds
Keeping feed in the feeder is the whole point, right? You’d think it would be easy. But most feeders don’t manage to do this simple task.
Dine-A-Chook Chicken Feeders are especially designed to reduce waste by keeping food off the floor and in the feeder. The trick is making the chickens go to the food, and not the other way around. Because chickens eat by putting their head into a Dine-A-Chook Feeder, they cannot thrash and throw food around. They can’t get their feet in there either! Thanks to our patented, vertical and horizontal interior paddles chickens are also deterred from raking feed out of the feeder.
Keeping feed in the feeder is about more than just reducing waste and saving money. It is also essential to good coop management, which is the key to deterring rodents and other pests in the chicken coop.
What Type of Chicken Feed to Use in a Dine-A-Chook Feeder
Choosing the right type of chicken feed to use in your Dine-A-Chook Feeder is important for reducing waste.
While a Dine-A-Chook is designed to work with most types of chicken feed, it is most effective with a pelleted chicken feed or a mash. Using a pellet or mash is healthier for your chickens too!
We recommend a pellet or mash because they are the feeds most likely to help prevent waste. Chickens scratch and rake feed onto the ground searching for the tastiest morsel. Therefore, feeds with high variability, like scratch mix and other grain mixes, encourage chickens to seek out their favourite parts, like sunflower seeds and corn. This causes more spillage and waste, and the problems that come along with them, like rats and mice. Scratch mix is often the cheapest feed, but all the waste means it ends up costing more money in the long run.
An additional problem is the fact that chickens consuming a scratch mix are unlikely to be getting a balanced diet. A general scratch mix is intended as a treat, not a balanced diet. A grain mix that is sold as a “complete” feed will have been fortified with extra protein, vitamins and minerals. But these additions are usually either powders, which often sink to the bottom of the mix and are wasted, or pellets, which chickens rarely consume enough of.
Do not use a molasses-coated feed or other sticky feed.
